Hello. It’s nice to meet you.
FAQ #1: What Do you “DO?”
This is probably one of the most frequently asked questions we as Americans receive when we meet someone new. Until recently, my answer to this question was entirely centered on my career. However, in October of 2021, after years of trying to conceive a child, my wife and I welcomed our son, Judah, into the world. And since that moment, my answer to this question has become more complicated. I’ll do my best to answer the question here, while giving a brief historical account of how the answer has shaped my professional present and future.
In September of 2021, one month before the birth of my son, I accepted a new position as an Account Supervisor with a local advertising agency here in Buffalo. The opportunity felt right, as it offered me more growth potential, scheduling flexibility, financial security, and more. With my wife’s expected due date set for early October, and my desire to give my current employer 30 days, we set a start date after the birth of my son, and I began the role three weeks after he was born.
The job was great. It was a strong fit for my skillset, I had an instant connection with my manager, and I was learning and growing at a rate I hadn’t experienced in years. However, I wasn’t able to fully dedicate myself to the role or the firm, because I felt called to engage more deeply in my role as a father. After hours of conversation with my wife, an honest conversation with my manager, and a sincere appraisal of my motives and priorities, I decided to take on another new role in January of 2022: Stay-at-home Dad. And that is what I currently “do” today.
FAQ #2: What Do You Want to Do?
While my career in advertising began in creative, I was fortunate to spend time on the accounts side of the business as well. And while I enjoyed my time spent in client service, my passion is and always has been writing, and I’m ready to get back to those roots. My experience working on the accounts side of advertising has given me a new perspective on creative work. And I’m ready to put that new perspective into practice.
FAQ #3: What DoES THAT LOOK LIKE?
Honestly, I’m not entirely sure what the exact role will look like or what the title would be. I’m most interested in roles that involve copywriting and content strategy. That includes freelance opportunities, contract work, and part-time and full-time positions.
